Best Buy Chromecast 2nd Generation

The Google Chromecast (3rd Generation) sits as the entry-level casting-only option in Google's streaming arsenal. It originally arrived without much hype from Google, and it's pretty easy to see why. One of the best streaming devices of its time, this Google Chromecast review will show how model is nearly identical to the second-gen Google Chromecast model from 2015, only it's a little faster.

This Google Chromecast (3rd Generation) review will explain why it's still worthy, but know that Google's moved on. Check out our Chromecast with Google TV 4K review and our Chromecast with Google TV HD review to see the next generation.

If you've got a 1080p TV kicking around in your kitchen or guest room, and the set doesn't have smart features built-in, the Chromecast is still one of the best Google Home compatible devices for inexpensively watching Netflix, Hulu, et al. on a big screen. Otherwise, Google's attractive little dongle is behind the times.

The best reason to buy the Chromecast, as always, is that it has the simplest, easiest-to-understand interface of any streaming device on the market. That's because the Chromecast doesn't require you to learn a whole new OS or play around with an idiosyncratic remote control. Instead, you control the entire experience from your phone, tablet or computer.

We rounded up the best deals on streaming devices, 4K TV, soundbars, premium headphones, and more with hefty savings. If you want to get a jumpstart on getting the perfect gift for the holidays, then now is the right time.

We all know Reddit is a source of pretty strange stuff. This one we came across isn't exactly strange, but it's a rare one indeed. A customer walked into Best Buy with the intention of buying a second-gen Chromecast but walked out with a still unreleased third generation.

The OP (original poster) as redditors like to call it, clarifies that Best Buy must have put out the new device by mistake. When the cashier tried to scan the item, the Chromecast didn't appear in the database, but since the customer already had it in his hand and the price was identical to the second generation Chromecast, the guys over at Best Buy let him have it under the old SKU.

When the OP got home and tried to install it, he noticed there's something fundamentally different compared to the second generation. He then goes into detail about the design - the new Chromecast comes in a thicker shell, the top is no longer glossy and the Chrome logo is replaced by the Google one. Power is still delivered over microUSB (no USB-C), but the HDMI connector no longer magnetically attaches to the device.

The classic Chromecast is great for beginner streamers and those happy to stream from their phone. It supports hundreds of apps, including Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video (see our guide to the best Chromecast apps). You can also use this device as a second computer monitor and show photos using the Google Photos app. Find out more about keeping your photos safe by checking out our photo storage guide.

The main difference between the first-generation and second-generation Chromecast is that the latter is compatible with both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz WiFi, as noted in the Google Support center. The third-generation Chromecast retained all of the same features of the first two generations, but was designed to be faster and provide a higher frame rate of 1080p.

It is currently the only model out of the three generations listed on the Google Store alongside the latest model. If you want to buy a 1st or 2nd generation Chromecast, your only option is to buy one secondhand, though for the cost, you might as well go for the 3rd generation.

The Google Chromecast (3rd Generation) was released in 2018 and continues Chromecast's tradition of providing the best value in HD streaming video players. If you want to turn any TV into a smart TV capable of streaming Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and many, many more, this is the cheapest way to do it.

Released in 2018, the third generation Chromecast works by hooking directly into the HDMI port on the back of your TV, drawing power from its USB port and then acting as a receiver for streaming video links sent from your phone or tablet.

When Google launched the first Chromecast in 2013, I don't think they knew just how significant an impact these little streaming sticks would be. A mainstay among the best streaming devices, the Chromecast has undergone a major metamorphosis in the last year with the Chromecast with Google TV. This first Chromecast to feature a remote and an actual operating system rather than just being a receiver for content you cast from a phone or laptop, the Chromecast with Google TV is a major upgrade and the best Chromecast ever. Still, it's not the only one on the market.

The first three generations of the Chromecast were perfectly fine foundations, focused on an affordable and consistent streaming experience, but what about users who wanted to stream ultra-high-definition content? That's where the Chromecast Ultra comes in. Launched in the fall of 2016, the Chromecast Ultra is now five years old and is actually not sold individually anymore, but it's still sought-after by some UHD streamers because of the bugs the Chromecast with Google TV has had during its first few months with 4K content.

Released in 2018, the third-generation Google Chromecast is still kicking around for $30, and while it's not as shiny or fancy as the Chromecast with Google TV, depending on your circumstances, it can still be a good investment. This little stick only does 1080p streaming, but for smaller and older TVs that don't have smart apps, chances are they're only 1080p TVs anyway.

If you're not sold on the Chromecast with Google TV but still want something that works as a Chromecast and has a remote and on-device apps for easier browsing, consider the runner up in best Android TV boxes and my all-time favorite streaming series, the NVIDIA Shield TV. This lightsaber hilt of a streaming tube features the same amount of storage as the Google TV. Still, it has a much more powerful processor and NVIDIA's dedication to the best streaming experience.

If you want to buy a Chromecast in 2021, the clear winner is the Chromecast with Google TV. For $50, you get a 4K-capable streaming stick with a great interface, one of the best remotes on the market, and the best Google Assistant experience on a streaming box to date. While it's still working out a few minor bugs, Google's making a great effort here. I'm expecting the Chromecast with Google TV to be an even greater streamer by next Christmas than last winter when I bought two of them as gifts for family members because they were just so much better than their sad old TV apps.

The top-spec Nest Home Max from Google has a 10-inch HD display, brilliant speakers for listening to the radio or podcasts, and all the best smart features from the devices above, though it is the most expensive model. The display will adjust based on how light the room is to give you the clearest picture, and the built-in camera doubles up as an indoor security camera when not being used for video calling.

On a more subjective level, we considered how each speaker could fit into a home and where it performed best based on its size, sound quality, and special abilities, such as whether it had a screen, recipe content, sleep tracking, and the ability to be a security camera.

Google today announced the second generation of its Chromecast media streaming device, as well as a new Chromecast Audio device for playing audio through your speakers based on control from your phone.

With the launch of the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) today, the Chromecast (third generation) is officially being discontinued, Google confirmed to 9to5Google. The device will remain available for purchase until the remaining stock runs out.

The Google Nest Mini is the second generation of the Google Home Mini, and the smallest of Google's speaker range. Like the Amazon Echo Dot, it's a puck-like device that is available in four colours - all of which have fabric covers.

It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another Dealmaster. Our latest roundup of the best tech deals from around the web includes the Google Chromecast back down to $40 at various retailers. While we've seen this deal a handful of times this year, it's still $10 off Google's MSRP, making it another solid opportunity to save on what we consider the best 4K streaming stick for most people.

How nice is it that you can sit back, relax and ask a device to tell you the time, find a recipe for you or remind you to pack an umbrella for work tomorrow? The Google Assistant is actually available on all google home devices so the best price for this product directly corresponds to the device you are buying.

Google will announce a third-generation Chromecast model at its Made By Google event next week. How do we know for sure? Because US retailer Best Buy actually sold one to a punter at one of its big box locations.
